The Giving Tree finished for all to see!

Big Projects, Beginning to End, The Giving Tree

Last week I installed The Giving Tree (with the help of some very strong friends!) at the Gainesville Senior Rec Center. It stands tall at a final 6.5 ft x 12.5 ft x 2.5 ft and was finished by Powdercoating of Gainesville with a lustrous brown/gold and green/ gold finish. The powdercoating really shimmers and shines, and even changes tones depending on where you’re standing.  Check it out if you’re in the neighborhood. The address is 5701 NW 34th St, near the disk golf field and the Saturday Farmer’s Market.

This sculpture is inspired by Shel Silverstein’s famous book, The Giving Tree. The story depicts a boy and a tree whose lives are intertwined. It begins with the boy joyously swinging on the branches of the tree and eating apples, and ends with the old man sitting quietly on the stump of the tree. I believe the Senior Rec Center offers a new beginning to many community members. This is a place where you can learn and continue to grow together with others, enjoying the community you are a part of. I hope you will sit on the branches of this tree and enjoy the shade of it’s canopy. Together you will grow.
