Sculpting Air Potato Plants

Big Projects, Beginning to End, Exploring New Techniques, Hogtown Creek Park Signs, News from the Shop

I’ve been fortunate enough to spend the past couple months working alongside the Art in Public Places Trust and the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs Department to create a set of 3 site specific sculptural park signs for the Hogtown Creek Headwaters Nature Park here in Gainesville, FL.

Each sign will be located at a different location within the park and feature information about the history of the site, the local wetlands and water sheds, and the invasive species found inside the park.

We thought it would be pretty cool to feature different small plants and animals on each sign, relating to the information each sign will feature.  I chose to sculpt Air Potato Plants for the sign describing the local invasive species. The Air Potato Plant is a highly invasive species here in Gainesville, and one I hope many visitors to the park will recognize climbing up the base of the sign.

I utilized a wide range of metalworking techniques to sculpt these invasive plants. Here are some photos I snapped along the way. I hope you enjoy!
